Demographics

Gender Distribution

We are proud to champion girls’ education at the Urega Foundation. This year, in our 2024 cohort, 70% of our scholars are young women. While our selection process remains gender-neutral, we are pleased to see an outcome that aligns with our commitment to empowering future female leaders. We believe strongly in supporting young women who will make a meaningful impact in their communities and beyond.

Home Cities

Our Scholars hail from both big cities and tiny towns in Cameroon. Some of them battled hard to secure an internet connection to submit the application and interview with us.

Age Distribution

Our Scholars' age range from 13 years to 20 years, with most of them being 16 years of age. Beyond our restriction of a scholar being less than 21, we do not consider age in our decisions and look at each candidate in the context of her/his background and experiences.

School Type

Our Scholars study at both public and private institutions. Public Institutions have an average yearly tuition of around 50,000 FCFA ($90), and private institutions have an average yearly tuition of about 150,000 FCFA ($270) per year. The full list of schools can be found in our academic section below.

Academics

Academic Focus

In secondary school, students in Cameroon are prompted to choose between a focus in the Arts (covering subjects such as literature or business) or the Sciences (covering subjects such as physics or chemistry). We do not look at academic focus in selecting our scholars.

Academic Level

Form 5 represents the final year of secondary education, leading to high-school and Upper sixth represents the final year of high school. The majority of our scholars will be looking to complete the final year of high school, which is the most crucial year in their journey.

Academic Performance

Our selection process is not focused on the highest GPAs or the best students in class. We take the GPAs in the context of a candidate’s background and life experience when making a decision. We would rather select a candidate who espouses our values and criteria rather than one who may look perfect academically.

If you are a student, please remember we accept a wide range of grades and you are not defined by a number. Do not let these numbers discourage you from applying!

Schools Represented

Our Scholars study at 16 different secondary schools in Cameroon, spread across five regions of the country. We do not have a preference for private or public schools in our selection process; we care more about an applicant’s background and what they lack to be at their best.

Challenges

When selecting our Scholars, we deeply care about the context in which they achieved their results. Below, you will find some numbers that aim to capture a snapshot of the context in which our scholars have had to evolve over the past year.

  • Faced significant challenges in paying for their school fees and materials

Though 100% of our scholars expressed financial hardship, some faced significant challenges such as the loss of parents or guardians; or change of living conditions due to civil conflicts.

  • Went to bed hungry due to food insecurity

Some of our scholars experienced significant challenges with regards to nutrition as most went to bed without food to eat. We strongly hope that by financially supporting their education, we can significantly impact this statistic.

  • Had to take some form of employment to help pay for their education

Our Scholars have had to take jobs as street hawkers, vendors, or inventors - creating items to generate income to be able to afford to pay for their education.

Regardless of these circumstances, our scholars are passionate about their education and making a difference. These numbers do not do justice to how incredible they are! From robot creators, book authors, budding entrepreneurs, and dedicated learners, they run the gamut of awesomeness!
